Should I treat black mold in my Dubai villa myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of the master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It seems to have grown quite a bit since the heavy rains and humidity we had a few weeks ago. With the summer coming, I'm worried it will spread even faster. Is this something I need to get treated professionally right away, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution first?

It depends on the size and cause. For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot) caused by condensation, you can attempt to clean it yourself. The high humidity following Dubai's rains often creates these conditions, especially in closets with poor air circulation from the AC.
Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A vinegar solution can be effective for surface mould on non-porous materials. However, if the mould has penetrated the wallboard or plaster, or if it returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture source is still active. This is common when the issue is not just humidity but a hidden leak in the plumbing or building envelope. For any patch larger than a square foot, or if you suspect a leak, professional assessment is strongly advised. DIY attempts on larger infestations can aerosolize spores and spread them through your AC system. A proper inspection identifies the exact species and, crucially, the root cause of the moisture. In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the visible mould without addressing the underlying humidity or water issue guarantees it will return. |
