Should I treat black mold myself or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It wasn't there last month when I put away the winter blankets, but with all the humidity lately it's spread quickly. I'm worried it's behind the shelves now too.
What's the most effective way to treat this myself, or should I call my building's maintenance immediately?

Black mold appearing suddenly on an exterior wall is a classic sign of condensation buildup, which is extremely common in Dubai's climate due to high outdoor humidity meeting cold interior AC walls. The immediate priority is to identify and stop the moisture source.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach cleaner (ensure good ventilation). Dry the area completely with a fan. However, this is only a surface fix if the moisture issue persists. Since this is on an exterior wall and appeared rapidly, the moisture is likely penetrating from outside or due to a significant temperature differential causing constant condensation. This is a building envelope issue. You should call your building's maintenance immediately. Dubai Law No. 11 of 2013 places responsibility on the property owner to address issues affecting health and safety, which includes dampness and mold originating from the building's structure. They need to inspect the exterior wall for cracks or failed sealants and address the insulation issue. If the mold is suspected behind shelves or has spread, a professional inspection is warranted to assess the full extent. Simply cleaning without fixing the root cause will result in its immediate return. |
