Should I treat black mold myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the shoe rack. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp. What's the best way to treat this myself, or should I call the building management immediately?

Given Dubai's high humidity and the wall's dampness, this likely indicates a condensation or seepage issue from outside. For a small patch (under 1 sq ft), you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a detergent solution, then disinfect with a diluted white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide spray. Let it dry completely.

However, since the wall feels damp, the underlying moisture source must be addressed. Simply cleaning the mold will not stop it from returning. This dampness could be from a leaking pipe in the wall, a crack in the building's exterior, or severe thermal bridging causing condensation.

You should report this to building management immediately. Under typical Dubai tenancy and strata laws, the structural integrity and waterproofing of external walls are the building's responsibility. They need to investigate the exterior for leaks and address the moisture intrusion at its source. A professional inspection is recommended to diagnose the exact cause, as the visible mold might only be a small part of a larger problem hidden within the wall cavity.
