Should I treat black mold myself or call the landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's an interior wall in our Mirdif villa, and we only saw it because we were rearranging furniture. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's gotten worse behind there. What's the best way to treat this ourselves, or should we call our landlord first?

Call your landlord first. For rental properties in Dubai, the responsibility for addressing structural issues like mold, which is often caused by leaks or inadequate insulation, typically falls on the property owner. Notifying them creates a formal record and ensures any underlying cause is properly fixed.
Given Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer, mold behind furniture on an interior wall strongly suggests a condensation issue or a hidden leak from pipes or the AC system. Simply wiping the visible mold is a temporary fix; the moisture source must be identified and resolved to prevent it from returning. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, since you mention it's spreading and was hidden, the extent of the growth is likely larger than it appears. Professional inspection is advisable to assess the wall cavity and identify the exact moisture source, as improper handling can disturb spores and spread them. A proper assessment will determine if remediation is needed. |
