Should I treat closet mold before traveling or after?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started getting these small black spots on the back wall, and the clothes inside have a damp, earthy smell. It's been especially humid since the last round of rain a couple of weeks ago. I'm worried it's spreading but we're supposed to travel for Eid next week.
Is this something I need to get treated as an emergency right now, or can it wait until we get back in two weeks?

The growth you describe is a common issue in Dubai villas, especially after rain when humidity spikes and air conditioning use can create condensation. You should address it before traveling, as two weeks of unattended growth will allow it to spread further.
For now, move all clothing and items out of the closet immediately. Wash any affected fabrics. The wall itself requires more than wiping; surface cleaning often pushes spores deeper. A professional inspection can identify the moisture source—often a small leak in the plumbing or AC ducting behind the wall or condensation from temperature differentials. While not a life-threatening emergency requiring evacuation, treating it before you leave prevents a much larger problem upon return. In the UAE's climate, mold can spread quickly in enclosed, damp spaces. A certified inspector can contain the area, use HEPA vacuums to remove active growth, and apply antimicrobial solutions to prevent regrowth during your absence. The priority is stopping the moisture source. A proper remediation will include a post-clearance test to verify spore counts are back to safe, indoor levels, which is a standard practice for science-driven companies with their own microbiology labs. This gives you peace of mind that the issue is resolved correctly. |
