Should I treat closet mold urgently or can it wait?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially since the weather got more humid. I just pulled out some winter clothes and found a few of my sweaters have these fuzzy black and green spots on the back wall of the closet. We had a small leak near that wall during the last big storm a month ago, but the maintenance guy said it was fixed. Is this something I need to call a professional cleaner for urgently this week, or can it wait until after the Eid holidays?

Treat it urgently. That damp smell and visible growth on clothes, combined with a past leak, indicate active mold that's already colonizing organic materials. In Dubai's high humidity, especially with AC units creating temperature differentials, mold can spread quickly behind walls even after a superficial leak is "fixed."
The fuzzy black and green spots suggest multiple species; some types like Cladosporium are common on fabrics, but others like Stachybotrys (often very dark green/black) require professional remediation. Spores will continue to circulate into your bedroom air, which is a particular concern if anyone has allergies or respiratory sensitivities. Do not attempt to clean the sweaters with bleach or vinegar, as this can set the stains and doesn't kill spores embedded in the fibers. Isolate them in a sealed plastic bag until a professional can advise if specialized cleaning is possible. For the closet itself, a professional inspection is warranted. They will use a moisture meter to check the wall for residual dampness you can't see and may recommend an air test to identify spore levels. Remediation involves containing the area, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to address the root cause. While you could wait until after Eid for the full remediation, take immediate steps: move all items out, clean visible surfaces with a mild detergent, run a dehumidifier in the room if possible, and ensure the AC is set to a consistently low humidity level. Delay increases the risk of further damage to belongings and the property structure. |
