Should I treat small closet mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a few small black patches in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside. I'm worried it's mold, especially with the humidity starting to creep up again, but it's only a couple of small spots. How urgent is it that I get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

Small, visible mold patches often indicate a more extensive issue within the wall cavity, especially on an exterior wall in a Jumeirah villa. The high humidity and constant temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot exterior wall create significant condensation, a primary moisture source for mold growth.
For an area this small, you can attempt self-treatment with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. Thoroughly clean the visible area, but more critically, identify and address the moisture source. This is often the most challenging part. Ensure the exterior wall has no cracks or compromised seals and that the room’s AC is maintaining proper humidity levels, ideally below 60%. However, given the location on an exterior wall, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The visible spots are frequently just the tip of the iceberg, with colonization hidden inside the wall. A professional inspection, often involving a moisture meter and borescope, can determine the extent of the problem without destructive testing. In the UAE climate, ignoring it can allow it to spread quickly to insulation and structural elements. If the patches return after cleaning, you notice a persistent musty smell, or the wall feels damp, you should contact a specialist with the diagnostic tools to find the root cause. |
