Should I urgently clean my moldy AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell, especially when I first turn it on in our main bedroom. I wiped a small patch near the vent and the wall felt cold and the tissue came away with black spots. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this getting worse over the last month. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, and could it be affecting our health already?

Based on your description, this situation warrants immediate professional attention. The damp, earthy odor and visible black spots are classic indicators of active microbial growth within your AC system. In Dubai's climate, where air conditioning runs year-round and high humidity promotes condensation, AC units are prime locations for mold proliferation.

The fact that the wall near the vent feels cold suggests significant condensation is occurring, providing the constant moisture mold requires. The recent worsening of the smell indicates the colony is expanding. Health effects from exposure to mold spores blown directly into your breathing zone can range from allergic reactions (sneezing, itchy eyes) and asthma exacerbations to more severe respiratory issues, especially for immunocompromised individuals or those with pre-existing conditions. You may already be experiencing these effects without directly attributing them to the AC.

This is not a simple DIY cleaning task. Attempting to clean the vent yourself will likely aerosolize and spread a high concentration of spores throughout your apartment. A certified professional inspection is crucial to assess the full extent of the contamination within the ductwork and evaporator coil, which is invisible to you.

We strongly recommend you contact a specialist like Saniservice immediately for a comprehensive assessment. Our certified inspectors use tools like borescopes and moisture meters to diagnose the problem accurately, in line with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards. Please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection and prevent further risk to your property and health.
