Should I urgently get a mold inspection for coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I'm starting to worry it's more than just a cold. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs and found a few jackets with dark spots and that damp, earthy smell. We live in a villa in Mirdif and I'm wondering if the recent humidity made it worse. How quickly should I get a professional mold inspection done?

Based on your description, you should absolutely prioritize a professional mold inspection. The combination of persistent respiratory symptoms in children and the visual/olfactory evidence of mold growth in a confined storage area is a significant concern that warrants immediate action.

The dark spots and damp, earthy smell are classic indicators of an active mold colony. The recent humidity in Dubai acts as a powerful accelerant for mold growth, especially in poorly ventilated, dark spaces like under-stair cupboards, which are common in Mirdif villas. The spores from this colony are likely becoming airborne and circulating through your home's air conditioning system, which is a primary vector for distributing contaminants throughout a property in our climate. Your children's prolonged coughing is a potential indicator of exposure to these spores or mycotoxins.

While surface cleaning the visible mold on the jackets might seem like a solution, it addresses only a fraction of the problem. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize a massive amount of spores, exacerbating the air quality issue. A certified inspection is critical to determine the full extent of the contamination, identify the moisture source (which could be condensation from AC ducts, a minor leak, or simply ambient humidity), and assess the spore count in your indoor air.

For the health of your family, I recommend you seek a professional assessment without delay. Our certified team at Saniservice uses thermal imaging, moisture meters, and air quality tests to provide a comprehensive evaluation in line with Dubai Municipality guidelines. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. Until then, avoid using that storage area and consider keeping the AC on to help manage humidity levels.
