Should I urgently inspect AC blowing black dust?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to have black dust blowing out of one of the vents in the master bedroom. I’ve been getting terrible headaches for the past week, and my throat is constantly scratchy. I wiped the vent and it’s definitely a black, powdery substance. How urgent is it that I get this professionally inspected, and should I be using that room at all?

Yes, you should treat this as urgent and stop using that room immediately. The black dust is likely a significant accumulation of mold and microbial growth from the AC unit's damp interior, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate where condensation constantly feeds mold in ducts and drip pans. Your headaches and scratchy throat are consistent with exposure to mold spores and mycotoxins.

For your safety, close the vent and keep the bedroom door shut to contain the spread. Avoid sleeping or spending extended time in that room until the system is inspected and cleaned. The most critical step is a professional inspection that includes taking a surface or air sample for a lab culture. This is the only way to identify if the mold is the common, less hazardous Cladosporium or the more concerning Stachybotrys (true "black mold"), which requires a specific remediation protocol.

In the UAE, look for a provider that follows DM and DHA guidelines and can provide documented before-and-after testing from an accredited lab, not just a visual cleaning. They should inspect the entire AHU, ductwork, and drip pan for the source of the moisture. Until then, running the AC risks circulating contaminants throughout your apartment.
