Should I worry about black mold in my closet?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. With the humidity lately, the room has felt a bit damp in the mornings. How serious is this and do I need to call a professional immediately, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray?

The black spots in your closet are likely surface mold, a common issue in Dubai due to high ambient humidity and the constant cooling of AC units, which creates condensation. For a small, isolated area (less than 1 square meter), you can often manage it yourself.

Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not use bleach, as it is mostly water and can feed the mold deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and use a dehumidifier or a disposable desiccant bag in the closet to control moisture.

However, since this is on an interior wall and you feel dampness, the mold might be a symptom of a hidden issue. The wall cavity could have a small plumbing leak or, more commonly, cold spots from AC ducts causing condensation inside the wall. If the mold returns after cleaning, if the area is larger than a square foot, or if you detect a musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended to find and address the hidden moisture source. Companies with their own microbiology labs can identify the species and confirm the root cause, which is crucial for a permanent solution.
