Should I worry about black spots on my closet wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried it might have gotten worse after the heavy dew we had last week. My main concern is whether this is something I need to get checked out immediately or if it can wait a few weeks?

Yes, you should investigate those black spots promptly. Given its location on an exterior wall and the recent heavy dew, this is likely moisture-related mold growth, which is common in Dubai's climate. The high humidity, especially overnight, can cause condensation on cooler exterior walls, creating the perfect environment for mold behind furniture or stored items where air doesn't circulate.

For a patch you've just discovered, first move the boxes to allow the area to dry completely and improve ventilation. Wearing a mask and gloves, you can carefully clean a small area (less than one square meter) with a diluted detergent solution. However, if it returns quickly, spreads, or has a musty odor, this indicates an ongoing moisture issue that requires professional diagnosis.

A certified mold inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source—it could be a minor condensation issue or something more significant like a hidden pipe leak or insulation problem within the wall. They use tools like moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the cause without guesswork. The most critical step is resolving the underlying moisture problem; otherwise, the mold will almost certainly return, even after cleaning. For health safety, especially with black-colored mold in a bedroom, identifying the species through lab testing can provide clarity on potential risks, particularly for households with allergies or respiratory sensitivities.
