Should I worry about closet mold on an interior wall?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to smell really damp. I was putting away winter clothes today and noticed a few of my jackets have dark, fuzzy spots on them. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for about five years and this is the first time we've had this issue. What's the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should I be concerned about it spreading through the walls?

Yes, you should take this seriously. That damp smell and visible mold on your belongings are clear indicators of a moisture problem. In Dubai's climate, interior mold growth often stems from high humidity and condensation, even within walls, especially if there's a hidden plumbing leak or compromised AC drain line.
For a proper inspection, hire a professional who uses moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the source of the water intrusion without destructive guessing. They should also conduct air and surface sampling, with the samples analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab to identify the mold species. This is critical, as some types require more aggressive containment during remediation. It can absolutely spread through walls. The wall cavity can act as a hidden reservoir for mold if the humidity is high enough or a leak is present, allowing spores to circulate via the AC system. Before the inspection, minimize disturbance to avoid spreading spores. Keep the closet closed and consider placing a portable dehumidifier nearby. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can exacerbate the problem. The priority is finding and fixing the moisture source; without that, the mold will return. |
