Should I worry about mold growth due to humidity?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from the bottom of my closet. Upon inspection, there's visible mold growing on some of the cardboard boxes we stored down there. This is particularly concerning since it’s also where our winter clothes and shoes are kept. The AC seems to be running fine but I’m worried about the humidity levels. How can I prevent this from happening again?

Absolutely, humidity is a major factor contributing to mold growth. In the UAE and specifically Dubai, our climate can be quite warm and humid during certain periods of the year, making your concern valid. The high relative humidity levels, especially after heavy rains like those you mentioned last month, can create an environment conducive for mold proliferation.

In your case, it's essential to understand that stored items such as cardboard boxes, winter clothes, and shoes are at a higher risk when exposed to humid conditions. Mold spores can easily settle on these materials leading to visible growth over time. This not only poses health risks but also degrades the quality of your belongings.

Firstly, I recommend conducting an inspection by calling 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com for a professional evaluation. They will be able to assess the extent of mold contamination and provide appropriate remediation services if necessary.

To prevent future occurrences, ensure that humidity levels are maintained within acceptable ranges. In areas prone to moisture like basements or storage closets, consider installing dehumidifiers to keep relative humidity below 60%. Regularly checking for signs of dampness and addressing any leaks promptly can also significantly reduce the risk of mold growth.

Ventilation is key in preventing excess moisture. Make sure your home’s air exchange systems are functioning properly to circulate fresh air and remove stale, humid air. Additionally, sealing gaps around windows and doors might help prevent outside moisture from entering.

When storing items, use moisture-resistant packaging such as plastic bins or sealed containers. If possible, elevate stored goods off the ground slightly with pallets or shelves to improve airflow underneath them. This can aid in reducing condensation that often leads to mold growth on lower surfaces.

In conclusion, while humidity is a significant factor in mold proliferation, implementing these measures can greatly reduce your risk of experiencing such issues again. Don't hesitate to seek professional advice and treatment if needed.
