Should I worry about mold in my closet?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell in my bedroom closet, which is near the bathroom. My landlord has said he checks for mold regularly, but I’m not sure how often that really happens or if it’s on my part to address this issue. Given that we’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, should I be concerned about the mold, and what steps should I take?

Absolutely, you should be concerned about the mold situation in your closet. The musty smell suggests that there might be moisture accumulation which is a perfect breeding ground for fungi and molds. Given that your bedroom is close to the bathroom, it's not unusual to have an increase in humidity levels around this area, especially after rain.

In Dubai, particularly in the UAE, mold can pose significant health risks due to the warm climate and high humidity during certain months of the year. The presence of mold can lead to respiratory issues, allergies, and other health problems for residents. According to local regulations set by the Department of Economic Development (DED) and the Health Regulatory Authority (HRA), property owners are required to maintain their premises in a safe and healthy condition.

Given that you have noticed this issue only after 2 years of living there, it could indicate an ongoing problem or one that was not promptly addressed. Regular inspections by your landlord might not be enough as conditions can change over time. You should consider having the area professionally inspected to determine the extent of mold growth and whether remediation is necessary.

For a detailed assessment, contact a certified environmental inspection company like ours, Saniservice, at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. Our team will conduct a thorough evaluation using state-of-the-art equipment such as moisture meters, thermometers, and air quality testing devices to identify the source of moisture and extent of mold contamination.

In the meantime, here are some steps you can take:
• Avoid moving any items in or out of the affected area to prevent further spread.
• Open windows if possible to allow for better ventilation, but ensure it’s not raining outside as this could worsen the situation.
• Use fans or dehumidifiers to help reduce moisture levels. Be cautious about using excessive heat which can cause mold spores to become airborne.

It's crucial to address this issue promptly to prevent potential health hazards and property damage. Regular maintenance and proper handling of water leaks are key preventive measures that should be taken by both tenants and landlords in Dubai.
