Should my landlord handle bedroom mold urgently or can I?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It wasn't there when we did our deep clean a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately, I guess it's spread. Is this something I need to get my landlord to handle urgently, or can I tackle it myself with bleach from the supermarket?

Yes, your landlord should handle this. The black patch behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of a hidden moisture issue, likely from condensation due to Dubai's high humidity interacting with your cold AC walls. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root cause or the potential fungal structure within the drywall.

Under UAE tenancy law, structural issues and problems arising from building defects are the landlord's responsibility. A new mold patch appearing suddenly suggests a possible leak from an adjacent pipe or inadequate insulation, which they are obligated to investigate and rectify.

For your safety, do not attempt a DIY fix. Disturbing it can release spores. Inform your landlord immediately with clear photos and request a professional inspection to identify the moisture source. A proper remediation protocol involves isolating the area, removing affected materials like drywall, and applying specialized antimicrobials after the leak is fixed.

A certified inspector can use moisture meters and, if necessary, lab analysis to confirm the type of mold and the full extent of the problem, ensuring it is resolved correctly and doesn't return with the next humidity spike.
