Should we call a mold inspector for black spots?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots growing behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall. It’s been so humid lately that our windows are constantly fogged up in the morning. I’m handy and want to just scrub it off with bleach myself, but my wife is worried it’s a bigger issue. Should we call a professional mold inspector for this, or is it something we can safely handle on our own?

Given your description, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The black spots behind a wardrobe on an exterior wall, combined with constant window condensation, point to a likely humidity and condensation issue, not just a surface problem. In Dubai's climate, this is a common pattern where cool interior air from AC meets the heat from an exterior wall, creating a perpetual damp environment inside the wall cavity that you cannot see.
Scrubbing visible mould with bleach is a temporary fix that addresses the symptom, not the cause. The mould will almost certainly return because the moisture source remains. A proper inspection uses tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the exact source of dampness within the wall and assess the full extent of the growth, which is often more widespread than what is visible. For a situation like this, the inspection is less about identifying the mould type—though that can be done via lab analysis—and more about diagnosing the building moisture fault. The remediation plan must include fixing that underlying issue, such as improving insulation or addressing thermal bridging in the wall, to prevent recurrence. While a DIY approach might seem cost-effective, it often leads to repeated problems and higher long-term costs. A professional assessment provides a definitive cause and a permanent solution. |
