Should we call a pro for black mold near our toddler?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell that's settled into our bedroom closet. I opened it yesterday and found a bunch of black spots all over the back wall and on some of my shoes. My husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach, but I’m worried it’s more serious, especially with our toddler’s allergies. Should we call a professional mold remediation company or is this something we can safely handle ourselves?

Black spots in a closet with a damp smell from the AC is a classic sign of a condensation issue, very common in Dubai's climate. Given the proximity to your toddler and their allergies, a professional assessment is strongly recommended.
Bleach only removes surface discoloration and is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and shoe leather; it also fails to address the root moisture problem. The constant AC use creates significant condensation, and the closet's lack of airflow allows hidden mould to thrive inside the wall cavity. Disturbing it yourself risks spreading spores throughout the bedroom. For a child with allergies, exposure can measurably worsen symptoms like congestion and wheezing. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the damage behind the wall and identify the mould species. In many cases, remediation involves removing affected drywall, treating the cavity, and rectifying the moisture source—steps far beyond a surface wipe. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for property maintenance regarding dampness and mould. For a situation involving a hidden source, a respiratory-sensitive occupant, and potential structural materials, a professional evaluation is the safest course to verify the home's health. |
