Should we clean black mold from AC leak ourselves?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a bit, and now we've found patches of black mold on the wall behind the wardrobe. It's been humid for the last couple of weeks and my husband has started having a really bad cough in the mornings. Is this something we can clean ourselves with bleach from Carrefour, or is this a serious case where we need to call a professional mold remediation company?

Based on the symptoms you've described, specifically your husband's persistent morning cough, I strongly advise against attempting to clean this yourself. This is a serious case requiring professional assessment and remediation.

The black mold growth behind the wardrobe, fueled by the AC condensate leak and Dubai's high ambient humidity, is a significant health risk. The confined space creates a perfect environment for toxic mold species like Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) to proliferate. Disturbing it during a DIY cleaning attempt will aerosolize millions of mycotoxin-laden spores, drastically increasing your husband's exposure and likely exacerbating his respiratory symptoms. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall; it only bleaches the surface color and does not address the hyphae (root system) growing within the material, allowing regrowth to occur quickly.

Under Dubai Municipality regulations, significant mold infestations, especially those causing health effects and originating from HVAC systems, fall under health and safety concerns that are best handled by certified professionals. We use industrial-grade HEPA filtration units to contain the area, safely remove and dispose of contaminated building materials, and apply specialized antimicrobial agents designed for porous surfaces. Crucially, we will also identify and rectify the root cause—the AC leak—to prevent recurrence.
