Should we clean black mold ourselves with a toddler?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s been really humid lately and the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC on. My husband says we can just wipe it off with bleach, but I'm worried about it spreading and our toddler sleeps in here. Is this something we can safely clean ourselves, or should we call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on my professional experience in the UAE's environmental inspection sector, I strongly advise against attempting to clean a black mold patch yourself, especially with a toddler in the home. The primary concern is not the mold you can see, but the invisible mycotoxins and spores released during cleaning. Disturbing the colony without proper containment protocols will aerosolize these particles, significantly increasing your toddler's exposure risk through inhalation. Children are particularly vulnerable to mold-related health effects, which can include respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and persistent coughs.

The persistent high humidity and constant AC use in Dubai create a perfect environment for mold growth within wall cavities, meaning the visible patch is likely just the tip of the iceberg. Bleach is a superficial solution; it only removes surface discoloration but does not address the root moisture problem or kill the hyphae (roots) embedded in porous materials like drywall. The underlying cause, likely condensation from the AC or a minor leak, must be professionally identified and remediated to prevent rapid regrowth.

For the health of your family, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. We follow strict Dubai Municipality guidelines for assessment and remediation, which includes using HEPA containment, negative air pressure machines, and antimicrobial treatments specifically approved for use in occupied spaces. This ensures the mold is removed safely and permanently.

Do not risk your toddler's health. For a certified assessment and remediation plan, please call our specialists at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Saniservice is equipped to handle this safely and effectively.
