Should we get a mold inspection for black closet mold?« Back to Previous Page
|
We’ve lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed black speckles growing along the bottom edge of the wall in our bedroom closet. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked last month. My wife and I have both had a persistent dry cough and headaches for the past few weeks that won’t go away. Should we be getting a professional mold inspection or is this something we can handle ourselves with bleach?

The symptoms you're describing, especially their persistence and timing with the humidity spike, strongly suggest a professional mold inspection is necessary. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold growth, often in hidden areas like inside walls or under flooring. What you see on the surface is often just a small part of the problem.
While small surface mold on non-porous tile might be cleaned with diluted bleach, mold on porous drywall is a different issue. Bleach only bleaches the surface and does not kill the roots (hyphae) penetrating the material; the mold will almost certainly return. More importantly, attempting to clean it yourself can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your respiratory symptoms. The combination of visible growth and correlating health effects like a persistent cough and headaches moves this from a DIY project to a professional assessment. An inspector with a certified microbiology lab can identify the specific mold species through air and surface sampling. This is critical because it determines the actual health risk and the required remediation protocol, not all black-colored mold is the highly toxic Stachybotrys, but it must be ruled out. They will also use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of the moisture, which is the only way to prevent it from coming back. For a case like this in a Jumeirah apartment, a science-driven inspection is the safest and most effective first step. |
