Should we get a professional mold inspection for black mold?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It must have been there a while because my husband has had a persistent cough and itchy eyes for months that won't go away. We're in an older building in Deira and I'm really worried this is the cause. What are the health risks and should we get a professional mold inspection done, or is there a DIY solution we can try first?

Black mold in a bedroom closet, especially with ongoing health symptoms like a persistent cough and itchy eyes, warrants a professional inspection. The UAE's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, particularly in older Deira buildings where hidden condensation issues are common.
A DIY approach is not recommended here for two reasons. First, cleaning the visible patch addresses the symptom, not the underlying moisture source, which is likely hidden within the wall or AC system. Second, disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your husband's respiratory symptoms. A professional inspection will identify the exact species and, more critically, locate the moisture intrusion causing it. They use tools like moisture meters and thermal cameras to find problems invisible to the naked eye. For health-related cases, a lab analysis of a sample is advisable to confirm the type and concentration of mold present. Given the duration of the symptoms and the location, this is a case where professional diagnosis is the safest and most effective first step. It ensures the problem is fully resolved rather than temporarily hidden. |
