Should we handle mold from AC leak or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a little water onto the carpet in the corner of our master bedroom, and now I'm seeing a few black fuzzy spots starting to form there. With this humidity, I'm worried it's spreading behind the baseboard. My husband thinks we can just spray it with bleach, but I'm concerned it might be a bigger problem. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves, or should we call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

A small leak causing visible mold growth on carpet is a common issue in Dubai's climate, but it often indicates a larger problem. The high humidity means mold can spread rapidly into the drywall, underflooring, and behind baseboards, even if the surface looks small.
For an area smaller than one square meter, you can attempt to clean it yourself. Bleach is not recommended as it only removes surface discoloration and can worsen indoor air quality. Instead, use a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, scrub the area, and ensure it is completely dried with a wet/dry vacuum and dehumidifier. However, this only addresses the symptom. The critical first step is to fix the AC leak. Until the moisture source is stopped, the mold will return. Given that the carpet is wet and growth is visible, the padding underneath is almost certainly contaminated and would need to be removed and replaced. If you suspect growth behind the baseboard or a musty odor is present, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to assess the full extent of water damage hidden within walls. For confirmed contamination in building materials, professional remediation that includes containment and air scrubbing is necessary to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home. |
