Should we inspect mold in our Dubai home urgently?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few dark, fuzzy spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building. Given how humid it's been in Dubai lately, how urgent is it that we get a professional mold inspection, or can we handle this ourselves with bleach?

Dark, fuzzy spots on an exterior wall during Dubai's humid season strongly suggest active growth from condensation. Given the location in a closet with stored fabrics, this requires prompt attention.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar solution (not bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality for a time). Scrub the area, ensure it's completely dry, and address the moisture source—this is often condensation from the AC creating a temperature differential on the exterior wall. Improving air circulation in the closet is crucial. However, a professional inspection is strongly recommended here. The visible spots are often just the surface manifestation; the hyphae (roots) can penetrate the wall board. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the moisture and hidden growth behind the wall, which DIY methods will miss. They can also identify the species, as some types common in damp buildings here can cause more significant health issues. For a science-driven approach, the process involves lab analysis of a tape lift or air sample to confirm the type and concentration, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. This prevents it from quickly returning, which is a common frustration. The urgency is high because the humid summer months are when mold proliferates most aggressively. Delaying could allow it to spread within the wall cavity, turning a simple cleanup into a larger project. |
