Should we leave due to closet mold on outside wall?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom's walk-in closet has had this damp, earthy smell for a couple of months that I just couldn't place. I finally cleared out all our shoes and storage boxes today and found a patch of black and green fuzzy mold spreading on the back wall, hidden behind the shelves. We keep the AC on most of the time, but it's on the wall that faces the outside of the building. What kind of health risks should we be most concerned about, and is this something we need to leave the house for immediately?

You don't need to evacuate immediately, but you should restrict access to the closet and address it promptly. The damp, earthy smell is a clear indicator of active microbial growth, often caused by a temperature differential between your cold, air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall. This creates condensation inside the wall cavity, a very common issue in Dubai's climate.

The primary health risks from this type of mold are respiratory irritation and allergic reactions. You might experience worsened allergy symptoms, sinus congestion, coughing, or eye irritation. Individuals with asthma, compromised immune systems, or existing respiratory conditions are more susceptible and may experience stronger reactions. The specific risk level depends on the mold species, which requires professional identification.

For a concealed patch spreading on a structural wall, a professional inspection is strongly advised. DIY cleaning on visible surfaces often misses the root moisture problem within the wall, leading to rapid regrowth. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's interior damage and identify the exact species through lab analysis to determine the appropriate remediation protocol.

Until it's assessed, keep the closet door closed, ensure the room is well-ventilated when possible, and consider using a dehumidifier. The goal is to control the humidity that fuels the growth. For extensive hidden growth, remediation by a company following IICRC standards, which includes containment and air scrubbing, is necessary to prevent spore dispersal throughout your bedroom during the cleanup process.
