should we leave our apartment due to black mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing slowly because our AC unit is right on the other side of that wall and we've had a lot of condensation issues. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for a while now. Should we be worried enough to leave the apartment until it's professionally cleaned, or is a DIY cleaning with vinegar sufficient?

Leaving your apartment is likely unnecessary, but you should take immediate action. The health symptoms your husband is experiencing—stuffy nose and headaches—are common reactions to mold exposure, particularly during prolonged sleep in the affected room. The location behind the closet and its connection to the AC unit's condensation line is a classic scenario in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC operation creating cold surfaces where moisture condenses.

For a patch you've just discovered, a DIY approach can be a first step if the area is small (less than one square meter). However, vinegar is often insufficient for porous materials like drywall or wood, which can harbor mold deep within. A more effective DIY solution is a diluted bleach mix (one part bleach to ten parts water) or a dedicated mold remover, but ensure excellent ventilation and wear an N95 mask and gloves.

The greater concern is the hidden mold you cannot see inside the wall cavity from the AC condensation. This is a systemic issue that DIY surface cleaning won't resolve. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent of the growth, identify the mold species (as some types are more problematic than others), and locate the moisture source. They will use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside walls. Remediation involves fixing the condensation leak, removing contaminated materials properly, and ensuring the area is dried completely to prevent rapid regrowth in our climate. Until assessed, keep the bedroom well-ventilated and consider sleeping in another room if symptoms persist.
