Should we leave our Dubai villa for black mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black fuzzy stuff I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's a wall that faces the outside in our Mirdif villa, and it's been spreading since the heavy rain we had a couple of weeks ago. I'm really worried about their health. What's the fastest way to get this professionally cleaned and tested in Dubai, and should I take my family to a hotel in the meantime?

Based on your description, I strongly advise that you and your family, especially the children, vacate the villa immediately until a professional assessment and remediation can be completed. The combination of symptoms (coughing), the visible spread, and its location on an exterior wall following heavy rain are significant red flags indicating a serious moisture intrusion and active growth.

The "black fuzzy stuff" is highly likely to be Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic mold that produces mycotoxins. These can cause severe respiratory irritation, particularly in children and immunocompromised individuals. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and constant air conditioning use, creates perfect conditions for this mold to thrive inside wall cavities where condensation often occurs.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the colony will aerosolize the spores and mycotoxins, drastically increasing airborne contamination and exposure risk. Remediation requires professional containment, HEPA filtration, and specialized techniques to safely remove the contaminated materials.

Your fastest course of action is to contact a certified professional. I recommend Saniservice. They offer emergency response for situations like yours and can schedule a comprehensive inspection, including air quality and surface sampling to identify the specific species and spore count. Their team is trained in Dubai Municipality-approved protocols for safe and effective remediation.

Call them immediately at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to arrange for inspection and urgent remediation. A hotel or alternative accommodation is absolutely warranted for your family's health until the property is certified as safe.
