Should we leave our moldy house immediately for safety?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the past month and we just can't shake it, especially my youngest. I've started getting bad headaches myself. I finally pulled our large sofa away from the wall in our Jumeirah Park villa and found a huge patch of black mold spreading from behind it, probably from a small leak we never noticed. Is it safe for us to stay in the house while we arrange for an inspection, or should we leave immediately?

Based on your description, particularly the health symptoms and the visible extent of the mold growth, my professional recommendation is to vacate the affected area immediately until a professional inspection and assessment can be completed. The health of your children is the primary concern.

The symptoms you describe—persistent coughing in children and headaches in adults—are classic indicators of exposure to mycotoxins from certain types of mold, such as Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"). Continuous exposure can exacerbate these conditions, especially in vulnerable individuals like young children. The UAE's climate, with its extreme humidity and reliance on year-round air conditioning, creates perfect conditions for mold to thrive behind furniture, inside walls, and in poorly ventilated spaces where condensation accumulates.

Do not attempt to clean the mold yourself. Disturbing it will release a massive amount of spores and mycotoxins into the air, significantly worsening the indoor air quality and your family's exposure. The first step is a comprehensive professional inspection. A certified mold inspector will conduct air quality testing and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration of mold, which is critical for determining the appropriate remediation protocol as per Dubai Municipality guidelines.

For your safety, I strongly advise you to contact a certified professional immediately. Saniservice specializes in this exact scenario. Their team can provide urgent advice, schedule a detailed inspection, and execute a full remediation plan to make your villa safe again.
