Should we leave our moldy villa for our child's health?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Mirdif has been feeling really humid since the heavy rains a couple of weeks ago. I've just pulled out the sofa in the living room to find a big patch of black and green mold spreading on the wall behind it, and my youngest has had a persistent cough for days. How urgently do I need to get a professional remediation team in here, and should we be staying somewhere else until it's fixed?

Yes, you should relocate your family, especially your youngest child, until a professional assessment and remediation is complete. The combination of visible mold, recent humidity from rains, and a child's persistent respiratory symptom creates a situation where caution is the best course of action.

Mold releases spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air, which are respiratory irritants. For infants and those with developing or compromised immune systems, this can trigger allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and persistent coughing. The Dubai climate, with its high ambient humidity exacerbated by air conditioning creating condensation, provides an ideal environment for mold to thrive, particularly in hidden areas like behind furniture.

Do not attempt to clean a patch of this size yourself. Disturbing it will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your villa. A professional inspection is critical to determine the moisture source (likely seepage from the rains) and the full extent of the growth, which is often more widespread than what is visible.

Look for a remediation provider that follows IICRC standards and can provide before-and-after testing to verify the air quality has been restored. In the UAE, this level of documentation is what separates a proper remediation from a superficial cleaning. Your priority is to remove the exposure, then fix the moisture problem to prevent it from returning.
