Should we remove black mold ourselves or hire a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. My husband wants to just scrub it with bleach this weekend, but I’ve been getting headaches and a stuffy nose lately and I’m worried it’s connected. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves or should we call a professional company to deal with it?

Do not scrub it. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous surfaces but leaves the root structure intact; it also adds moisture, encouraging regrowth within days. Your symptoms—headaches and congestion—are common reactions to mold exposure, especially in an enclosed space like a closet.

For a small patch (under one square meter/10 sq ft) from a known leak, DIY can work if you address the source first. Fix the AC leak completely. Then use a HEPA vacuum on the area, followed by scrubbing with a detergent like soapy water or white vinegar. Dry it immediately with a fan. However, the mold's root system is likely deep within the building material (plaster, drywall), making complete DIY removal very difficult.

Given the UAE's high humidity and constant AC use, hidden condensation is a persistent issue. The risk of spreading spores during cleaning is high. A professional inspection, which includes moisture mapping and air quality testing, identifies the full extent of the problem and verifies the mold species. This is crucial for your health, as some species are more problematic than others. Remediation companies follow strict protocols for containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination. For health-related concerns and any uncertainty about the extent, professional assessment is strongly advised.
