Should we remove black mold ourselves with a baby nearby?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, it's maybe the size of a dinner plate. I think it might be from a slow leak in the AC unit that's in the adjacent wall, as that area always feels a bit damp. My husband thinks we can just scrub it with bleach ourselves, but I'm worried about our two-year-old sleeping in the next room. Is this something we can safely handle on our own, or should we absolutely call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

With a two-year-old in the home, DIY removal of a dinner plate-sized patch is not advisable. The primary risk is not the cleaning itself but aerosolizing the mold spores during scrubbing, which can spread them through your HVAC system and into the living space, where they can be inhaled. Infants and young children are more vulnerable to respiratory irritants.

In Dubai's climate, the constant AC use and high humidity create perfect conditions for mold regrowth if the underlying moisture issue isn't solved. Your suspicion of a slow condensate leak from the adjacent AC unit is the critical factor. Simply scrbbing the visible growth with bleach will not address the moisture source, and the mold will almost certainly return.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is recommended to identify and rectify the moisture source—likely a blocked or leaking drain line from the indoor AC unit. Proper remediation involves containing the area to prevent spore spread, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment, followed by verification that the space is safe. This process provides documented assurance that the environment is healthy for your child. You can request that the inspector provides a clear explanation of their findings and the data supporting their clearance of the area.
