Should we remove Jumeirah bedroom mold ourselves or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. The area always felt a bit damp, but with the recent humidity, it's gotten much worse and the room has a persistent earthy smell. What's the best way to deal with this ourselves, or should we call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

That black patch behind the wardrobe and the earthy smell are classic signs of a persistent moisture issue. Given Dubai's high humidity and the wall's dampness, this is likely a condensation or seepage problem that has been developing over time.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach is possible. Move the wardrobe to expose the area fully. Scrub the mold off with a solution of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Dry the area completely with a fan. The critical step is fixing the moisture source—wipe down walls for condensation daily and ensure your AC is set to a consistent, dehumidifying mode.

However, the location behind furniture and the persistent dampness suggest a more embedded issue. Mold behind walls often spreads further than what's visible. In such cases, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall cavity's true extent and identify the exact moisture source, which is often missed in DIY attempts.

The decision to call a pro hinges on the mold returning after cleaning or if the affected area is larger than a square meter. Professionals follow Dubai Municipality and DHA guidelines for containment and removal, preventing spores from spreading to other parts of your home during the process. For health safety, especially with that persistent smell indicating active growth, an assessment is the most reliable way to ensure it's resolved.
