Should we remove this closet mold ourselves or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a ton of black, fuzzy mold covering the entire back wall of our walk-in closet in Jumeirah. It's the wall that faces the outside and it feels damp. What’s the best way to get rid of this ourselves, or should we just call the building management right away?

For a mold outbreak of that scale and location, calling building management is your first step. The dampness on the exterior wall suggests a potential structural leak or seepage from outside, which is the property management's responsibility to investigate and repair under Dubai's common building regulations. Simply cleaning the mold without fixing the underlying moisture source will guarantee its return.

Given the UAE's high humidity and the wall's damp feel, this is likely an ongoing water intrusion issue exacerbated by condensation from your AC. The "black, fuzzy" description, while common, requires professional identification; some species are more problematic than others.

For immediate action, do not attempt to scrub it yourself. Disturbing a large colony without proper containment can aerosolize spores throughout your home. You can document the issue thoroughly with photos and notes on the dampness for management. Ensure the closet is well-ventilated and consider using a dehumidifier in the room to help manage ambient moisture temporarily.

A professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent within the wall cavity and identify the mold type, which guides the remediation protocol. If management is unresponsive or the issue is deemed internal, a certified mold remediation provider can properly contain the area, remove the contaminated materials, and address the root cause to prevent recurrence.
