Should we see a doctor for bathtub mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month, and I've started getting headaches whenever I'm getting ready in the morning. I just pulled back the silicone sealant around our bathtub in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment and found a ton of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it. What kind of health risks does this pose and should I get them checked by a doctor immediately?

Yes, you should see a doctor and mention the mold exposure. Persistent coughing in children and new headaches in adults are common symptoms of mold sensitivity. A doctor can assess if these are allergic reactions or something more, and rule out other potential causes.

The black, fuzzy mold under silicone sealant is often Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (black mold), both of which are known to produce irritants and allergens. In Dubai's humid climate, especially in bathrooms with constant AC use creating condensation cycles, this mold can thrive unseen and release spores into the air you breathe.

For remediation, this is a serious case requiring professional help. Simply scrubbing visible growth is ineffective and can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. The sealant must be completely removed, the area beneath treated with antimicrobial solutions, and new sealant properly applied to prevent rapid recurrence. Given the health symptoms and extent of hidden growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full scope. They can perform air quality tests to identify spore types and concentrations, which is valuable information for your doctor.

In the interim, increase bathroom ventilation by running the exhaust fan for longer periods and keep the door closed when showering to contain spores. Do not attempt to remove it yourself given the symptoms.
