Should we sleep elsewhere due to AC mold and symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking on and off for a couple of months, and now I've found a patch of black mold on the back wall behind my clothes. My husband has started waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache every morning. How quickly do we need to get this professionally treated, and should we be sleeping in another room in the meantime?

Yes, you should sleep in another room immediately. Your husband's morning symptoms—stuffy nose and headache—are common reactions to mold exposure, particularly during prolonged, undisturbed exposure like sleep. The leaking AC has created a perfect environment for mold in Dubai's humidity, providing both moisture and organic material (dust) for it to grow.

For a situation involving visible growth and active water damage, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The leak must be fixed first to stop the moisture source; simply cleaning the mold will be ineffective if it continues to get wet. A proper inspection will identify the extent of the growth, even inside the wall or AC unit itself, which is common here.

In the UAE, remediation for a case like this involves containing the area to prevent spores from spreading, removing the contaminated porous materials (like the damaged drywall), and thorough HEPA vacuuming and cleaning. DIY cleaning with bleach is not advised as it can aggravate the situation and doesn't address the root cause.

Until a professional can assess and remediate, keep the closet door closed and the bedroom door closed to isolate the area. Move any clothing or belongings from that closet to prevent further contamination. The priority is eliminating your exposure, so sleeping elsewhere is the most important immediate action you can take.
