Should we sleep elsewhere due to urgent black mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It wasn't there during my last cleanup a few months ago, but with the recent humidity, it's appeared and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, and should we be sleeping in another room in the meantime?

Based on your description, the situation warrants immediate attention. The combination of visible black mold and your husband's symptoms—stuffy nose and headaches upon waking—strongly suggests the mold is affecting indoor air quality and health.

Yes, you should sleep in another room until the issue is assessed. Direct and prolonged exposure, especially during sleep, can exacerbate respiratory issues and allergic reactions. The interior wall location points to a possible condensation issue or a hidden leak from plumbing or AC drainage, which is common in Dubai's climate where year-round AC use can create significant moisture traps within walls.

For a patch that appeared this quickly, professional inspection is urgent. DIY cleaning is not recommended for recurrent or symptomatic mold, as it often addresses only the surface and not the underlying moisture source. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the water intrusion, which is the critical first step. They should also take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to identify the mold species; this confirms the health risk and guides the remediation protocol.

In Dubai, remediation companies should follow guidelines like the NADCA ACR standard or the IICRC S520 standard for mold removal. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration, removing contaminated materials, and treating the area with antimicrobial solutions, not just painting over it. Once the moisture source is fixed and the area is properly remediated, you can safely return to the room.
