Should we tell our landlord about dangerous bedroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a huge patch of black mold in the back of the wardrobe on the outer wall. Since the last round of heavy rain, my husband and I have both had constant sinus headaches and a dry cough that won't go away. Is this kind of mold in a bedroom closet a known health risk here, and should we tell our landlord or just try to clean it ourselves first?

Yes, this type of mold is a known health risk, and your symptoms are consistent with exposure to mold spores in a sleeping area. The high humidity following Dubai's heavy rains often leads to condensation on cooler outer walls, creating the perfect environment for mold growth inside closets and behind furniture.

You should absolutely inform your landlord immediately. Under Dubai rental regulations, the property owner is responsible for addressing the root cause of the issue, which is likely a building envelope or insulation problem on the outer wall. Simply cleaning the visible patch yourself is a temporary fix; the mold will return if the underlying moisture intrusion is not resolved by the building management.

For a case this significant with associated health symptoms, a professional inspection is advised to assess the full extent. They can identify the moisture source and the mold species, as some types commonly found here are more problematic than others. Until it is professionally remediated, keep the wardrobe doors open for ventilation, consider using a dehumidifier in the room, and if possible, temporarily relocate while the issue is being addressed to allow your symptoms to subside.
