Should we test black mold or clean it ourselves?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a big patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where it meets the outside wall. My husband and I have both had a persistent cough and headaches for the last couple of weeks, and it’s not getting any better. The AC unit is right in that hallway too, so I'm worried it's spreading spores.
Is this something we should get professionally tested for our health, or can we just clean it ourselves with bleach?

Based on your symptoms and the location, this warrants a professional inspection. A persistent cough and headaches coinciding with visible mold growth are strong indicators that the issue is affecting your indoor air quality. The proximity to the AC unit is a significant concern, as the system can circulate spores throughout your home.
In Dubai's climate, mold on an interior wall, especially an exterior-facing one, often points to a condensation issue or a hidden leak within the wall cavity. Simply cleaning the visible patch with bleach addresses only the surface and will likely fail, as the underlying moisture problem remains. Bleach also cannot address spores already in the air or within your AC system. A proper assessment involves using moisture meters to find the water source and air or surface sampling to identify the mold species. This is critical because while many molds just cause allergic reactions, some types produce mycotoxins that can cause more pronounced health effects. The lab analysis from a certified inspector provides the evidence needed to plan an effective remediation, ensuring the AC system is also checked for contamination. For a case with health symptoms and potential HVAC involvement, a DIY approach carries a high risk of making the problem worse. |
