Should we treat closet mold ourselves or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet. I think it's from the recent humidity, but now my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. How quickly do we need to get a professional to look at this, or is it something we can handle ourselves with a vinegar spray?

Small black spots in a closet during Dubai's humid season are a common issue, often from condensation when the AC-cooled air meets warmer surfaces. The connection to your husband's stuffy nose is plausible, as even common molds like Cladosporium can irritate sinuses and worsen allergies overnight.

For a patch smaller than one square foot, a DIY approach can be attempted. Use a solution of white vinegar and water, scrubbing gently. However, this only removes visible growth, not the microscopic spores embedded in porous materials like drywall or wood. If it returns within a week, the moisture source isn't controlled or the root problem is deeper.

Given the symptoms and the UAE's high humidity, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They will identify the exact moisture source—which could be a small leak, capillary action from a slab, or insufficient AC airflow—and the mold species. This is crucial, as some species require specific containment protocols to prevent spreading spores during cleaning. In many villa communities, underlying construction issues are a frequent cause of recurring problems that DIY can't fix.

The priority is to stop the moisture; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of how well you clean. A proper inspection provides that diagnosis and a remediation plan that addresses the root cause, not just the symptom.
