Should we treat this black mold ourselves or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels a bit damp. My wife has started waking up with a stuffy nose and I'm worried it's connected. How urgently do we need to get this professionally treated, or can we handle it ourselves with a bleach spray first?

Given the dampness on an exterior wall in Dubai's humid climate, this is likely a condensation issue that requires professional assessment. The wall's dampness suggests an underlying moisture problem that simple cleaning won't fix. The connection to your wife's symptoms is plausible, as mold exposure commonly causes nasal congestion and irritation.

For a small patch under one square foot, you can carefully clean the surface with a vinegar solution (more effective on porous surfaces than bleach) to manage it temporarily. However, this is a stopgap. The dampness indicates that moisture is penetrating the wall, likely from outside humidity condensing on the cooler interior surface, a frequent issue here. The mold will return unless the root cause—the moisture intrusion—is identified and rectified.

You need a professional inspection to diagnose the moisture source. It could be insufficient insulation, a minor leak, or capillary action drawing moisture from the ground. A proper remediation plan involves fixing the moisture issue, then safely removing the contaminated materials. Given the health symptoms and the potential for the problem to be larger inside the wall cavity, seeking a professional assessment is the most prudent course of action. Look for providers who use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source and can provide a lab analysis to confirm the mold type.
