Shuold I urgently remove black mold for my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's starting to spread in the corners of our master bathroom shower. It's been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in last month. I tried wiping it with bleach, but it just came back darker. Is this something I need to call a professional about urgently, or can it wait until our annual maintenance next month?

Yes, given your children's symptoms, you should treat this as urgent and not wait for annual maintenance. The persistent cough directly correlates with the visible mold growth, and the fact that bleach failed indicates a deeper, active colony.

In Dubai's high humidity, bathroom mold is rarely just surface-level. It thrives on the constant moisture from showers and the condensation from AC systems. Bleach only bleaches the visible spores on non-porous surfaces but doesn't kill the root mycelium growing within the grout or behind the tiles. This is why it often returns stronger.

For health, black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum is one of many black-appearing molds) can produce irritants and allergens that are particularly problematic for children, whose respiratory systems are still developing. A persistent cough is a common reaction. The goal is to remove the source of the irritation.

You need a professional assessment. A proper remediation involves identifying the moisture source, containing the area to prevent spore spread during cleaning, using HEPA vacuums, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobials that penetrate porous materials to prevent regrowth. For a case with health symptoms, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the environment is safe.

Until you can get it professionally addressed, increase bathroom ventilation. Run the exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower and keep the bathroom door closed to contain spores. Wipe down wet surfaces to reduce immediate moisture.
