Soaked AC pipe insulation with mold: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our villa's upstairs AC has been struggling to keep up and my DEWA bill was ridiculously high last month. I checked the air handler in the utility room and the insulation around the chilled water pipes to the fan coil is completely soaked and has black mold growing on it. I'm in Al Barsha and worried this is affecting our air quality, but I have no idea what it should cost to get this fixed properly. Should I attempt to replace the insulation myself or is this a job where I absolutely need to call a professional mold chiller specialist?

Hey there, that’s a really common issue we see here in Al Barsha, especially with the high humidity. What you’re describing is a classic case of condensation soaking the insulation on your chilled water pipes, which then creates the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive. That black growth is almost certainly mold, and it's a major red flag for indoor air quality.
Honestly, this is NOT a DIY job. The insulation itself is a specialized material that needs to be correctly selected and installed to prevent this from happening again. More critically, disturbing that mold will release a massive amount of spores into your air handling system, contaminating your entire upstairs AC and ductwork. This can lead to serious health issues for your family. In the UAE, proper mold remediation follows strict guidelines to ensure it's contained and removed safely. A pro will use HEPA filtration, antimicrobial treatments, and then replace the insulation with the correct vapor barrier type to prevent a recurrence. The high DEWA bill is a direct result of your AC working overtime because the compromised insulation is drastically reducing its efficiency. You absolutely need a professional assessment. We can test the mold to identify the species and perform a full hygienization of the system.
