Suspected mold in bedroom: removal and testing in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an outside wall. My sinuses have been constantly blocked and I've been waking up with a headache for the past month. I’m worried it’s connected. What’s the most effective way to get this tested and properly removed here in Dubai, and should we be staying somewhere else while it’s handled?

The symptoms you describe, especially waking up with sinus congestion and headaches, are common reactions to mold exposure in a bedroom environment. The location behind a wardrobe on an outside wall is a classic spot for hidden mold growth in Dubai, as the wall is likely colder due to AC, leading to condensation that the furniture then traps.

For proper testing, a professional inspection is the most effective route. They will identify the moisture source—often a small leak or condensation from the AC line—and take air and surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the species and spore count. This is critical, as the removal protocol depends on the type of mold and the extent of the growth.

Removal for a case like this is not a simple wipe-down. It requires isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and properly treating the wall and any affected porous materials. In many Dubai villas, the gypsum board (drywall) itself can be compromised and may need cutting out and replacing once the underlying moisture issue is fixed.

You should absolutely consider staying in another room until the inspection is complete and the remediation is finished. Disturbing the mold during investigation or removal will aerosolize spores, significantly increasing your exposure and potentially contaminating other areas. Look for a provider that follows IICRC standards and can provide verifiable before-and-after lab reports to confirm the space has been returned to a healthy condition.
