Toddler's room mold: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler's room in our Jumeirah apartment has had a persistent damp smell ever since the heavy humidity last month. I just pulled his wooden dresser away from the wall and found a patch of black and green mold about the size of my hand behind it. He’s been sneezing a lot more than usual, and I’m really worried. Is this something I need to get professionally cleaned immediately, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution?

Given the size (hand-sized), the visible colours (black and green), and the fact your toddler is already showing symptoms like increased sneezing, this requires professional assessment and remediation. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and condensation behind furniture are common causes, and what's visible is often just a fraction of the actual growth.

For a toddler's room, DIY cleaning with vinegar is not recommended. Vinegar only tackles surface mould and doesn't address the spores or the moisture source. More importantly, disturbing the mould during cleaning can aerosolise spores, potentially increasing your son's exposure and respiratory irritation. This type of cleaning is a temporary fix at best.

The immediate step is to isolate the area. Keep the toddler out of the room, ensure good ventilation by opening a window if outdoor humidity is low, and leave the dresser pulled away from the wall. Do not attempt to wipe or spray it yourself.

A professional inspection is crucial to identify the mould species and the root cause—often condensation from the room's AC unit or a lack of airflow behind the furniture. Reputable remediators in Dubai will use containment procedures, HEPA filtration, and specialised antimicrobials to safely remove the biomass. They should also provide a moisture assessment to prevent recurrence, which is a persistent challenge in Jumeirah apartments. The goal is to verify the environment is safe through post-remediation testing, not just to make the visible stain disappear. Given the health sensitivity, a professional approach is the only way to be certain.
