Treat black mold in closet myself or call building management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s been really humid lately in Dubai. I'm worried it's been there a while and is making my allergies act up. What's the best way to treat this myself, or should I call my building management first?

Start with your building management. In Dubai, building exteriors and structural water leaks are the owner's responsibility. The mold on an exterior wall suggests a possible leak or insulation issue from recent humidity and condensation, which they must address at the source.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Let it dry completely.

However, since your allergies are acting up, the spores may have spread into the closet's contents and air. Surface cleaning won't address this. The humidity also suggests a potential for hidden mold within the wall cavity if there's a leak.

For health concerns and to verify the extent, a professional inspection is wise. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the moisture source and can take air samples to identify the spore count in your bedroom. This is the only way to know if the mold is actively affecting your indoor air and to ensure the building's remediation is complete.
