Treat black mold in closet myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it seems worse since the humidity spiked last week. What's the most effective way to treat this myself, or should I just call a professional company immediately?

It depends on the size and severity. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can often handle it yourself. Since it's on an exterior wall and worsened with humidity, the root cause is likely condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot outside wall, a very common issue in Dubai.

For a DIY approach, first address the moisture source. Improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and occasionally leaving the door open. A moisture-absorbing product like silica gel can help in enclosed spaces. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the affected area with a mixture of detergent and water; avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth. After cleaning, the wall must be completely dried.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional assessment is recommended. They can identify the extent of the problem, often using moisture meters, and perform remediation that includes containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home. Persistent mold in a closet, especially on an exterior wall, can indicate a more serious insulation or construction gap issue that needs to be sealed. For rental properties, document the issue and notify your landlord, as resolving structural condensation is typically their responsibility.
