Treat mold behind wardrobe myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I was rearranging furniture. The wall feels damp and there's a large black patch spreading from the corner. What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves, or should I just call the building management immediately?

Call building management immediately. In Dubai, landlords are responsible for fixing the root cause of moisture intrusion, which is almost certainly a leak or severe condensation from an AC line or pipe inside the wall. The damp wall and spreading patch confirm this is an active water issue you cannot fix yourself.

Do not attempt to treat the visible mold with bleach or other DIY solutions. This only addresses the surface and the hidden moisture will cause it to return quickly. More importantly, disturbing it can release a high concentration of spores into the bedroom air, potentially worsening your children's coughing.

While waiting for management, move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. Keep the bedroom well-ventilated and run a dehumidifier if you have one, as our high humidity accelerates mold growth. Document the issue with clear photos and a dated report to management, referencing your health concerns.

Given the symptoms and the scale you describe, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the air quality and the full extent of the hidden mold. They can provide the documentation needed to ensure management completes a proper remediation, not just a superficial clean.
