Treat small black mold myself or hire pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It’s been humid lately and I’m worried it’s spread further inside the wall. Is this something I can treat myself with bleach, or should I hire a professional mold removal company in Dubai, and roughly how much would that cost for a small area?

For a small, visible patch in Dubai's climate, you can attempt to treat it yourself, but with important precautions. First, identify and stop the moisture source; this is almost always a prerequisite. In a closet, it's likely due to high humidity condensing on the cooler wall or a small, hidden plumbing leak from an adjacent bathroom.

A simple DIY approach involves scrubbing the area with a detergent solution (not just bleach, which only removes surface colour) and ensuring it is completely dry. However, this is only suitable for a surface-level patch no larger than one square foot. Given you suspect it has spread inside the wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended.

The high humidity and constant AC use in Dubai create ideal conditions for mould to thrive within wall cavities, especially on cold bridges where condensation forms. Disturbing a colony yourself can inadvertently release a large number of spores throughout your home.

A reputable remediation company will first conduct a moisture mapping assessment to find the full extent of the problem, which is often far greater than what is visible. They then contain the area, remove contaminated materials like drywall or insulation safely, use HEPA vacuuming, and treat the cavity with EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions. The final, critical step is a clearance test to verify the spore count has returned to normal indoor levels.

For a small area contained to a single wall cavity, the process is typically a focused project. The cost is not exorbitant but is an investment in a proper, science-driven solution that addresses the root cause and verifies the result, preventing rapid regrowth. Always request a company that provides before-and-after lab data from an independent microbiology lab to confirm the job's success.
