Treat small closet mold myself or call professional immediately?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet. I'm guessing it's mold, but it's been there for at least a couple of months without getting much bigger. With the humidity rising now, should I be treating this as a total emergency and calling a professional immediately, or is it something I can handle myself with a vinegar spray?

Small, stable mold spots in a closet are common in Dubai and often manageable yourself. The high humidity, especially now, combined with cooler interior walls from AC, creates perfect conditions for condensation and mold in poorly ventilated spaces like closets.

For an area that small, start by cleaning it with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution. Wear a mask and gloves. The critical step is identifying and controlling the moisture source. It's likely condensation from the adjacent wall or lack of air circulation. Move clothes away from the walls, leave the closet door open periodically, and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier inside.

You should treat it as urgent if the area is larger than one square foot, if it returns quickly after cleaning, if there's a musty odor in the room, or if household members experience worsening allergies or respiratory issues. In those cases, or if you discover staining or softening of the drywall, professional assessment is wise to identify hidden moisture and the mold species. Certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the source, and lab analysis can determine if it's a more problematic type.
