Urgent: AC mold causing child's asthma cough, see doctor now?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Park seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell every time it kicks on. My youngest son has been having a really bad cough and wheezing at night for the past three weeks, which is when this all started. I'm starting to panic that it's mold in the ducts triggering his asthma. How urgently do I need to get this professionally inspected, and should I be taking him to a doctor immediately or trying to clean the vents myself first?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional and medical attention. The damp, earthy smell is a classic indicator of microbial growth, likely mold, within your AC system. For a child with asthma, this is a significant health risk.

You should take your son to a doctor or pediatric pulmonologist immediately. Be sure to tell them about the timing of the symptoms and the AC issue, as this is a critical piece of diagnostic information. His respiratory health is the absolute priority.

Do not attempt to clean the vents yourself. Disturbing the mold colony without proper containment protocols will aerosolize a massive amount of spores and mycotoxins throughout your apartment, dramatically worsening the air quality and potentially making your son's condition much more severe. DIY cleaning is ineffective and hazardous in these scenarios.

In the UAE's humid climate, especially in areas like Jumeirah, AC units are a prime breeding ground for mold if not maintained. The inspection and remediation process is highly technical, involving visual assessment, air and surface sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels, and then a controlled remediation process following NADCA and IICRC standards.

This is not something to delay. We need to identify the contamination source, typically the evaporator coils or ductwork, and formulate a remediation plan. Please, for your family's health, get a professional inspection booked right away.

Call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an emergency inspection. We can assess the situation and provide the necessary documentation for your landlord if needed.
